No matter where you travel from, Los Angeles, Orange County or far regions of Arizona, the drive to Lake Havasu is generally long and drab.  The infinite expanse of barren desert landscape, while unique in its own way, can get monotonous after a while.  Brown toned flatlands stretch hundreds of miles until jagged volcanic mountain ranges break the horizon.

Those visiting from wooded states may find Southern California’s endless deserts fascinating, but for those of us who travel those dusty trails weekly, it becomes pretty routine.

Until spring, that is, when vibrant wildflowers in hues of yellow, purple and salmon spread out beside I-10 like a magical living carpet.  Brittle ocotillos with their red tips ablaze don lush green leaves while nondescript flat leaf cactus sprout brilliant blooms of lemon yellow and pink.  Spears of blue lupine spring up amidst patches of mustard and undulating hillsides blush orange with California poppies.

If spring break isn’t a good enough reason to head to the river, experiencing the desert in full bloom certainly is.  In this current climate of economic uncertainty and financial woes, sometimes a dose of mother nature at her finest is all it takes to put things into perspective.  Visit PHOTO GALLERY and check out Desert Blooms to experience the living desert in all its glory.
